Black Adoptees Meetup was born in 2024 from a simple conversation and a deep desire to create a space specifically for Black adoptees. It was founded on the understanding that being a Black adoptee often means navigating spaces where others may not fully understand your experience. We recognize the unique challenges—and the powerful need—for connection, validation, and community. This space exists so Black adoptees can come together, feel seen, and build relationships rooted in shared identity and understanding.
TARCIA SMITH and KATHERIN GARLAND are the co-founders of Black Adoptees Meetup.
Tarcia is the host of The Adoption Journey Podcast and
Katherin is an author, memoirist, and blogger who is best known for her memoir, In Search of a Salve: Memoir of a Sex Addict.
They are both adoptees, who identify as Black and want to live in a world where Black adoptees can "just be."
